Like many others, I gave myself some time off over the Christmas period. This was a welcome retreat to recharge after almost 3 years without a much of a break.

The thing with my breaks is, I tend to keep on working through them in some capacity! (That’s how I know I chose the right work; I love to do it even when I’m not earning money for it).

Sure I didn’t wake up at my usual 3.45am to meet PT clients by 5am, and I didn’t instruct any classes. However, I did continue to train at home and undertook more than one course of study to improve your and my experience, in training.

One of those courses was Vinyasa Yoga. Yoga has long been a practice I have had great belief in. I have long recommended Yoga to my clients for it’s mind and body balancing benefits. So now, instead of sending clients off to do Yoga with someone else, they will have an opportunity to practice it with me.

My own beliefs and practice will be in alignment with my business.

One of the main benefits I have noticed by combining Yoga with other types of training, is the improvement in execution and co-ordination of other exercises.

Sometimes I hear from clients that they believe they are uncoordinated. However, from my experience in Personal Training, it is more often a lack of flexibility that prevents correct execution.  I have found that by improving flexibility and posture through Yoga practice, that clients can then better execute most weighted and bodyweight exercises.

Lack of flexibility builds upon itself. If you’re tight through your hip flexors for example, many of your basic exercises can not be performed correctly. Think lunges, squats and even core exercises.

Just some of the other benefits of yoga include:

  • Increased muscle strength and tone

  • Improved breathing, energy and happiness

  • Improvement in metabolism

  • Weight Reduction

  • Improved athletic performance

  • Prevention of injury

  • Improves posture

  • Increases blood flow

  • Change of perspective. Builds mind body awareness

  • Boosts immunity

  • Increases your heart rate

  • Lowers blood pressure

  • Lowers cortisol levels

  • Improves focus

  • Improves balance

  • Maintains nervous system

  • Improves sleep

  • Improves digestive function e.g. IBS

  • Increases your self esteem

  • Encourages compassion and self care
